Yes, "ghoti" is actually a phonetic spelling for the word "fish." Strange, but true. Read more here. No wonder ESL learners find our native language so complicated. We have rules that break rules of rules, and then expect you just know which rules to follow and when. Whew. I'm tired just thinking of it. It's fun to note the uses of "ghoti" in film (Batman), toys (Neopets), language (Klingon), and good ol' Mac-Speak (Mac's speech synthesizer pronounces "ghoti" as "fish" by default.)
